BORED in a VUCA world. (Stolen Focus)

Updated: Jun 3, 2022

Bored is the beginning.

Bored is welcome.

Bored is what happens right before the world cracks open for them.

Bored is their restlessness.

They will wrestle with it.

Or maybe they’ll rest.

Bored happens when the inputs run out.

Sometimes it’s the only way the inputs will be quiet.

But they need them to be quiet.

When inputs are quiet, outputs rise.

They can create from quiet.

They can wonder from quiet.

Explore. Try. Find.

Bored is the beginning.

Bored is welcome.

Bored is good.

A number of educators at LLV are currently reading ‘Stolen Focus” by Johann Hari. At first glance, you would be forgiven that it is going to be a tirade against the evils of technology. It is so much more than that.

None of us adults can deny that we have, in our lifetimes, lived through tectonic shifts and changes in our experience and understanding of the world that could never have been predicted and that we are daily dealing with VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity)

Why is it then, that these same adults find it so hard to accept that in order to equip our young people to live in this VUCA, school also has to provide a radically different experience and teach a completely new curriculum in addition to the one that is mandated?

Even before COVID, the world that we experienced was changing rapidly. The impact of disruptive thinking and design changed the way we eat (Hello Fresh), travel (Uber), communicate (mobile technologies), work (anywhere, anytime).

Schools are not only places of academic learning, they are communities within themselves and need to reflect the rapidly changing landscape in which they sit.

At the same time, schools need to make brave decisions about our collective wellbeing.

So, this week’s challenge is to allow yourself, your children, your family to experience boredom and then wait for the magic to happen.

The evolution of VUCA above and how Leaders can use this model to navigate this crisis.

is from Kevin Tan you can read more about VUCA as a framework for evolving leadership and cognitive ability on Kevin's Linkedin articles
