The Power Of A Student Led Conference

You may have experienced something called a teacher parent conference where the teachers talk about the student and their learning. But when does the student get a say on how they are finding school? Well the answer is usually never!

Here at LLV we have something called a Student Led Conference where the students do the talking. In a student led conference the students talk about their learning, how they are finding the work and lots more. One of the main things we focus on during the conference is the LLV Learning Characteristics Wheel

If you don’t already know, these are helping us to be more empathic, self-aware, resilient, collaborative and creative. We talk about how

we use them to direct our learning, which of them we have improved in and which ones we would like to get better at.

Student Led Conferences let us as students have a chance to share how we feel at school and let our teacher/teachers and parents know what we might need help with. Student led conferences do not replace meetings with parents or wellbeing sessions they just add another level of support!

So what are some benefits of a Student led conference?

  • It teaches students to take responsibility for their own learning, actions and decisions.

  • They can feel more supported and less stressed about not being able to discuss their work and challenges with someone.

  • Give students more freedom and choice with what they want to do with their learning.

  • Gives students a chance to direct learning themselves with more confidence.

I found that when I did my Student Led Conference in a creative way it helped me explain it in a less awkward and boring way. Doing it through art can make it fun! It made me proud of my work. What I did also showed my parents a bit of how I like to work as well!

When you do the student conferences you can show off the work and projects you have been doing throughout the year. This helps your parents understand more about how you like to learn and more about the school's fantastic way of teaching, learning and working.
